The homes along “The Danforth”, as the locals call it, are influenced by its neighboring communities, namely Playter Estates, Riverdale, East York and Danforth Village. This cosmopolitan area is diverse and includes the famous Greek Town, which is one of the largest Greek communities in North America. Spanning a rather large geographic area from Broadview to the west to Victoria Park to the east, The Danforth features a variety of home styles. Homes along The Danforth consist of semi-detached homes typically found in East York and Danforth Village and the stately detached Edwardian and Victorian homes of Playter Estates and Riverdale. Increased demand for Danforth Real Estate has driven prices upward and spurred increased home renovations. This area consists of young professionals who are drawn to the local nightlife, excellent restaurants, patios, terrific shopping and local markets and young families who enjoy the local parks, nearby schools and recreation activities. It’s proximity to numerous subway stations along the Bloor-Danforth Subway line has made these neighbourhoods easily accessible and attractive.
Historically a working-class area, the arrival of higher income residents and the subsequent development of larger homes has resulted increases in real estate values. The advent of Taste of the Danforth, which is a weekend long celebration of Danforth Avenue cuisine and culture, has made the area far more popular in recent years.
The business improvement associations in this area are extremely active. This stretch is so large that there are 4 active BIA’s in these communities!!! The BIA is made up of commercial property owners and tenants who work with the city to create competitive and safe business areas. FUN FACT: The prohibition of serving alcohol in East York, which ceased to exist in 1970, resulted in a large concentration of alcohol serving restaurants and bars along Danforth Ave.
