Playter Estates is an exclusive and sought after neighbourhood located just east of the Don Valley and north of Danforth Ave. Middle and upper middle income earners who are drawn by the stately homes, great shopping and dining on the Danforth, accessibility and the well performing Jackman Avenue Public School have made this small pocket a hot ticket!
History
This community takes its name after the Playter family. Geroge Playter, a loyalist who emigrated to Canada in the 1790’s following the American War of Independence, held the land grants on both sides of the Don River. In the mid 1870’s John Lea Playter built the brick farmhouse located at 28 Playter Crescent, which was still in the family’s possession until 2006 when it recently sold for over 2 million dollars. In 1912, the land surrounding the home was subdivided and the present day neighbourhood was built.
Homes
Playter Estates consists of large detached and semi detached Edwardian and Victorian homes built mostly between 1912 and 1930, with the largest homes surrounding the old Playter family mansion. In addition to the Rosedale-like mansions, this area is also home to comparatively smaller semi-detached and detached homes. Make no mistake, smaller semi’s near Fulton or Browning are in high demand too! This entire neighbourhood is no stranger to bidding wars and aggressive strategies with fixer uppers being no exception.
School:
Almost a century after these homes were built, this neighbourhood has become a magnet for young professional families with children eager to be in the catchment area of the well performing Jackman Avenue Public School. Offering English and French immersion, Jackman Public school is only 1 of 11 schools in the Toronto District School board to receive the Platinum Status Eco Schools with a green roof, a number of outdoor learning gardens, a human sundial, and a very active EcoTeam and Gardening Club. The popularity of this school coupled with its well performance results in the EQAO provincial standardized tests has resulted in higher real estate prices in the area. Jackman Ave Public school is a closed school, meaning that they only accept students living within the Jackman Ave. school district.

It’s easy to get anywhere in the city from Playter Estates! With Broadview and Chester stations a short walk from Playter Estates and Bloor St. and the Don Valley Parkway nearby your options are endless.

One of the perks of living in Playter Estates is the access to great restaurants, inviting cafes, trendsetting boutiques and diverse shops along Danforth Ave. Another favourite hub is the Carrot Common which is located on Danforth and Jackman. This shopping destination features many shops which support a healthy lifestyle and is the go-to place for natural and organic products. The Carrot Common also includes the famous Big Carrot which is a natural food market. It doesn’t stop there! While you’re here, stick around for a massage, a facial, shiatsu, aromatherapy or even a yoga class. It’s easy to see why this spot has become a meeting place for the community.

This park’s recreation facilities include seven tennis courts, an artificial ice rink, sports fields, a swimming pool, and a walking/running track.
